Leah Suarez, one of Charleston’s premier vocalists, will lead her jazz ensemble in “A Celebration of Women in Jazz” 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on The Citadel campus.
The concert is presented during Women’s History Month and pays homage to women who contributed to jazz.
Suarez will honor female artists such as Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Mary Lou Williams, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Elis Regina, Melba Liston, Anita O’Day, Betty Carter and Shirley Horne.
The evening will feature a mix of styles: blues, swing, bebop, bossa nova, fusion and more. Suarez also will debut a new composition, commissioned by The Citadel for this event.
She will be joined by Mark Sterbank on reeds, Richard Harris White Jr. on piano, Tyler Ross on guitar, Jake Holwegner on bass, Ron Wiltrout on drums and Gino Castillo on percussion.
General admission tickets are $5; free with Citadel ID. VIP tickets are $45 and include reserved front row seating, a personalized CD and a wine-and-cheese reception with Suarez and the band after the concert.
