Vocalist Leah Suárez returns to the Holy City, recently making Mexico City her home base, presenting an intimate, one-night-only concert in duo format for this third installment of a burgeoning series for the year in the intimate workshop-turned-listening room of Suzanne Allen Studio. Suárez’s treasured and popular concert series of similar style at the former Modernisme Art Gallery (2006-2007) combined contemporary art and live music, making for a decadent blend.
Joining Suárez is pianist Gerald Gregory and other special guests invited for the evening. The music programmed will feature a range of repertoire indicative of Suarez’s own cosmopolitan fusion of traditional jazz, world folk music, blues, bossa nova, bolero and more, themed appropriately for the winter season and holidays.
POSADA DECOLORES is inspired by the traditional Mexican posadas. What is a posada, exactly? Suárez says, “A posada is a part of the Mexican culture that, at its simplest, is a blend of Christian (Catholic) Christmas holy days and indigenous cosmic celebrations. At its core, it’s a big-hearted, cozy celebration, gathering, a resting place, shelter on the journey, a party, una fiesta. I relish any opportunity to blend my worlds and I see this as one way to share in tradition while celebrating another year lived, a new decade upon us, the return of the light, and to hug our nearest and dearest. POSADA DECOLORES gives me the opportunity to extend my appreciation for this life through song and to celebrate with my Charleston family. Let’s get cozy!”
“I am overjoyed to collaborate yet again with Suzanne (Allen) and her team to create an intimate vibe that only complements the music,” Suárez says. “Suzanne is a long-time friend and to have the opportunity to work together in this way is incredibly inspiring. I am grateful to her for opening her studio doors and for giving me the space to create with such freedom. This is the Charleston I know and love.”
