Vocalist and Charleston native, Leah Suárez, shares her time between the Holy City and Mexico City. She returns to the stage for a one-night-only concert of her Salón DECOLORES series for the new year in the intimate workshop-turned-listening room of Suzanne Allen Studio. Suárez’s treasured and popular concert series of similar style at the former Modernisme Art Gallery (2006-2007) combined contemporary art and live music, making for a decadent blend.
Joining Suárez is pianist Gerald Gregory and other special guests invited for the evening. The music programmed will feature a range of repertoire indicative of Suarez’s own cosmopolitan fusion of traditional jazz, world folk music, blues, bossa nova, bolero and more.
PEREGRINA: Songs for the Journey is a program “inspired by the roads well-worn and the swirling seas of life” Suárez says. “I’m fascinated by travel, migration, blinding mission, serendipitous meetings and life-altering choice. The word “peregrina” literally translates to “pilgrim,” from Spanish, in its feminine derivative. It is also alluding to the bird of prey, the peregrine falcon, the fastest animal on Earth. As for the journey itself, the music which inspires this program evokes themes of devotion, joy, wonderment, love, loss, faith, hope, desire, and perspective, themes shared on the physical journey – the pilgrimage to far, distant unknowns and the most sacred, personal, and enigmatic of all – the journey to our most personal selves. The music is inspiration for the start of this new year, the new decade upon us and the journey ahead.”
I am overjoyed to collaborate yet again with Suzanne (Allen) and her team to create an intimate vibe that only complements the music,” Suárez says. “Suzanne is a long-time friend and to have the opportunity to work together in this way is incredibly inspiring. I am grateful to her for opening her studio doors and for giving me the space to create with such freedom. This is the Charleston I know and love.”
